Is Bob's age a problem for you? A report in Computer Weekly some years ago said that IT bosses found older workers were loyal, reliable, experienced, able to start projects immediately, good at problem solving and able to take responsibility. On the down side, however they were lacking in people management skills, more expensive, poorer in IT skills and less adaptable. I can only endorse their positive conclusions and say that I think I have successfully overcome all the negative attributes (Perhaps with the exception of the "more expensive"). Another report in Computer Weekly quoted one respondent as saying "In my experience, as with other areas of the business and life in general, you will often find that the older candidates can enrich the teams they work in by adding business experience along with the technical skills" Is Bob's age a problem for Bob himself? I have no problems working for, or with, people half my age. About 70% of my bosses have been younger than me, some of them female. All I ask of a manager is that they know what they want from me and have a view of the work-life balance not too far removed from my own. |
